Woolscape reflects artist Nicola McGarry’s love for exploring materials in unconventional ways. Instead of following traditional methods like spinning or felting, she experiments with carded wool in its raw form. Drawn to its soft, tactile quality, vibrant colours, and earthy scent, McGarry rolls the wool into unique colour combinations inspired by her experiences in nature.

Emerging from her impressions of the landscape, this work is a tribute to the Okanagan. It translates her sensory memories into a tactile experience, capturing moments like a spring bike ride through a hillside of yellow balsam root, the aromatic sage, and deep orange creases of ponderosa pine bark. The work imprints the quiet awe of watching the shifting reflections of the vast lake and a brilliant sunset so vivid that it demanded she pause by the road, its colours fading behind the hills.

Ultimately, Woolscape is McGarry’s visual and tactile expression of the Okanagan’s unique spirit.
