Printmaking at the Okanagan Campus of the University of British Columbia is a result of the vital partnership between the Kelowna Art Gallery and the University of British Columbia Okanagan. “The Kelowna Art Gallery and the University of British Columbia Okanagan collaborate as often as we can, working together to support students,” says Renée Burgess, Head of Public Programming at the Kelowna Art Gallery. “We are firmly committed to fostering the talents of local art students.”
In preparing for the exhibition, students learn the key components of showing works in a professional manner. By participating in this exhibition, the students gain valuable experience in curating, and installing their work.
The techniques of printmaking have been in existence for centuries, being explored by artists such as Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, and Andy Warhol. Today printmaking takes many different forms, from low-tech and traditional to requiring the use of extremely specialized equipment and expertise which require equipment and materials that are not affordable or available to many people. Luckily, post-secondary art programs, printmaking cooperatives, or art galleries offering print-specific programming provide a solution to these financial barriers.
