The Courtyard
Kookum Lounge offers visitors an interactive space of light, sound, and comfort in our inner courtyard. Instead of hide or canvas artist Jaimie Isaac refers to the architectural form of the tipi and changes it by using upcycled water-resistant sails from sailboats sewn together to form the tipi covering, the materials symbolizing the migrations of settlers who came to Turtle Island from across the waters. Kookum Lounge attunes to Indigenous-Settler relations and intersections of histories and present moments. The flooring is made of a patchwork of insulated tarps that represent tent cities, layered on top is a floral Kookum-scarf fabric which resembles the blankets of matriarchal comfort. In fact, Kookum is the Anishinaabe word for “Grandmother.” This immersive installation offers a place of refuge and reflection while encouraging intercultural exchange. Storytellers and nappers alike are invited to rest within the space, to listen to one another, and to reflect.
Jaimie Isaac is a curator and interdisciplinary artist, an Anishinabe-kwe member of Sagkeeng First Nation and is of British heritage. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from University of Winnipeg and a Master of Arts from UBC Okanagan.
