Tony Scherman: Works on Paper

drawn from the permanent collection
June 2 to July 29, 2012

Tony Scherman, Gillian [Anderson], 2001, oil on paper, 21 ¼ x 17 in. (53.9 x 43.1 cm)
Collection of the Kelowna Art Gallery, gift of the artist, 2007.

We are pleased to showcase a selection of twelve works by this protean Toronto-based artist, selected from a gift he made to the Kelowna Art Gallery in 2007. Scherman is a virtuoso of his means and visitors will see a wide range of painting and drawing media used on paper or vellum supports. The images range through the artist’s stock-in-trade over the last decade or so: food (usually arranged for serving), faces, flowers, and the odd animal. While these depicted items are easily recognizable, penetrating into Scherman’s actual subject, or, in his case, the content of his work is another matter. Suffice it to say here that his themes confront some of the darkest aspects of human nature and human history.
