PREPARATOR AND TECHNICIAN

Job Title: Preparator and Technician 

Department: Curatorial

Job Summary
The Preparator / Building Technician contributes to the objectives of the Kelowna Art Gallery by carrying out tasks defined below. The Preparator / Building Technician reports to the Curator and the Executive Director.

Hours: 30 hours per week
Wage: $24.00 per hour

Start date: Position is open until filled with an immediate start.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Preparator:

  • Working within the curatorial department to design and implement solutions for exhibitions.
  • Hanging artwork and installing audio/visual exhibition components.
  • Handling and moving artworks with diligence and high attention to detail.
  • Building crates, temporary walls, plinths, shelves, etc. as needed.
  • Drywall repair and painting.
  • Scheduling and managing contractors for assistance on larger projects.
  • Doing maintenance for outdoor public artworks.
  • Working on ladders and scissor lifts.
  • Transporting exhibition furniture between the gallery and off-site storage unit.
  • Transporting works of art within the Okanagan and Lower Mainland region.
  • Willingness to answer exhibition support calls outside of regular work schedule.

Building Technician:

  • General building upkeep and maintenance, both inside and out: exterior and interior lighting, plumbing, repairs, courtyard and fountain, seasonal decorating. Daily checks of wall condition, gallery rounds, mechanical rooms, etc.
  • Manage recycling, trash gathering, and removal.
  • Liaises with staff of the City of Kelowna and outside suppliers for repairs, inspections, fire drills, and estimates.
  • Participates in emergency preparedness duties with other staff.
  • Assists with set up and take down for special events, tables, chairs, etc.
  • Organizes workshop and storage areas.

General:

  • Attends special events and staff meetings, as required.
  • Makes all purchases required for Gallery’s physical maintenance, with Executive Director’s approval.
  • Makes supply purchases required for exhibition installations and for permanent collection maintenance, with Curator’s approval.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is 30 hours per week.
  • Additional hours may be required, dictated by installations, shipping and receiving of artwork, city requirements and other deadlines.

Skills Required:

  • Competent knowledge and experience with power tools
  • Professional training in handling all types of artworks according to museum/gallery standards.
  • Knowledge of safe working procedures is required.
  • Excellent organizational, project planning, and time management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Broad range of design abilities (drafting and reading/creating plans) and construction (drywalling, wall framing, exhibition display furniture, painting), audio-visual technology and installation skills, and safe use of power tools.
  • Working knowledge of word processing/email programs on PC platform.

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary degree in studio fine art, or equivalent technical training.
  • Professional experience in art handling, and installation techniques.
  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation Board regulations and safe building and maintenance practices.
  • Possess a valid current driver’s license.
  • Possess level one first aid certification (training will be provided if required).
  • Ability to operate a scissor lift, or willingness to become certified.

Call for Art Instructors (ongoing)

The Kelowna Art Gallery is always seeking to expand its offerings of adult and youth workshops and classes and is accepting proposals from qualified instructors to teach a variety of art skills.

Class offerings run from January to June and September to December. Class scheduling options are 6-week sessions during the day and evenings, or can be single weekend workshops.

Proposals should include the following:

– The type of class/medium you would like to teach
– A few examples of your work in that medium (please send .jpg files)
– Preferred or suggested times you would like to teach (day, evening, weekends)
– A resume outlining previous teaching experience, education, and experience as a working artist
