Professor Norman Cornett: “Since when do we divorce the right answer from on honest answer?”
A documentary film by Alanis Obomsawin
Join us for a screening of this film followed by a discussion with Professor Norman Cornett. Organized and presented in co-operation with the University of British Columbia Okanagan Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. This is a free event, open to the public.
In 2007, Dr. Norman Cornett was dismissed from his academic position at McGill University without explanation, possibly for his unorthodox teaching methods. Dr. Cornett and his dismissal are the subjects of a 2009 NFB documentary Professor Norman Cornett: “Since when do we divorce the right answer from an honest answer?”, written and directed by Alanis Obomsawin. In this film Obomsawin takes a thoughtful look at how mainstream universities teach young people to become the citizens who will shape our society.
Alanis Obomsawin is one of Canada’s most distinguished documentary filmmakers. She has made over thirty-five films, and has earned numerous honours, such as the 2001 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. In 2002 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in 2004 she received imagineNATIVE’s inaugural Milestone Award for Outstanding Achievement.
