Art Adventures – July/August 2012

Join us for a creative adventure this summer! Make unique art, new friends, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

The Kelowna Art Gallery offers a variety of half-day and full-day art camps for children ages 5 to 12. Taught by local artists, classes include special visits by guest artists, and trips to local studios within Kelowna’s Cultural District, as well as  to places like Waterfront Park, Kasugai Gardens, and City Park.

Preschool camps are also available for children ages 3 to 5 years.

Class size is limited so that children receive one-on-one instruction in a friendly, non-competitive environment.

PRESCHOOL CAMPS
For ages 3 to 5
Time: 9 to 11 am

July 9 – 13: Once Upon A Time…
Enter an enchanted world of art! Children will step into the world of Fantasyland and be transported to magical places. Here they will create art using various media, including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, and much more! Young artists will be guided through a wide variety of fantasy-based projects and create their very own amazing works of art.

July 23-27: The Magic of Nature and Numbers
Do you like nature? What is your favourite number? Young artists will explore the magical connection between nature and numbers with an exciting program designed to engage participants in discovery and creative response to the wonders of numbers and their relationship to the natural world.

August 13-17: Tribal Voices
Imagine dancing, singing and storytelling in the Australian outback, or the Northwest coast of British Columbia. Children will have the opportunity to create decorated rain sticks and tribal masks. Bring your stories!

August 20-24: Wild, Wild, West
Giddy-up cowboys and cowgirls! Go back to the good ol” days of horses, lassos, wagons, and more! Each child will have a chance to create their own western-themed art projects in this multi-media exploration of the West. Children will have fun developing their own unique artistic styles and saddling up for the wild, wild, west!

MINI CAMPS
For ages 6 to 8
Time: 9am to 12pm

July 9-13: Hit the Town
Begin each day with an adventure in Kelowna’s Cultural District. Be inspired by local hot spots such as Waterfront Park and Kasugai Gardens, and then return to the Gallery to make some fabulous keepsakes from your journeys around town.

July 30-August 3: Primed and Ready
This class is guaranteed to be a painting experience like no other. Participants will be given projects that will teach them the basics of painting, and will push the boundaries of their imaginations. We provide the paint, you supply the creative juices.

August 7-10: Cartooning Fun (4 days – Special Pricing)
Through simple drawing games and instructor demonstrations, students will learn quick and easy ways to create their very own cartoon characters. Their imaginations will be free to explore the many possibilities of humorous art as they learn how to illustrate a variety of facial expressions and actions in their own unique cartoon characters.

August 20-24: Just My Imagination
Set your inner artist free! Each day will bring a new opportunity to explore different art forms such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The sky’s the limit as you explore and create.

July 23-27: Art and Grind
Design your own skateboard deck and spend a day mastering the skills! This camp will include lessons in designing graphics, applying them to the decks, and skateboarding at the end of the week.

DAY CAMPS
For ages 6 to 8
Time: 9am to 3pm

July 16-20: Mini Masters
Try your hand at combining a range of mediums to create luminous landscapes, poetic portraits, and stunning still life. This camp will explore the work of historical and contemporary art masters, giving participants a chance to experiment with art-making techniques in the style of great artists throughout history.

DAY CAMPS
For ages 9 to 12
Time: 9am to 3pm

August 13-17: ART-Rageous
Using all kinds of materials and ideas, participants will create the most awesome works of art!  You might be printmaking one day and making sculptures the next, or even learning to paint. There will be endless opportunities to express yourself!
