After graduating with honours from the University of Victoria, Jim Elwood went on to the Banff Centre for Fine Arts studio program and then to the University of Calgary Art Education program. He is an accomplished artist in several media, including drawing, watercolor, and block printing.
Elwood’s time is divided among working as an artist, an illustrator, and an art teacher. Regardless of the media, the consistent theme throughout his work has been the natural environment. Whether a mixed-media environmental series of watercolour portraits of landscapes, the end purpose is the same: to capture the “sense” of place.
When teaching, Elwood has a similar purpose; by passing on technical and creative skills to artists and students, he hopes to improve their ability to truly “see” what is around them.
