Martin Pearce: This Was a Place

September 5 to November 1, 2009

Ontario-based artist Martin Pearce works with both drawing and painting, approaching each of these from an entirely different direction. This show is comprised of a selection of his drawings, including one that is ten feet long, of a disjointed landscape dotted with hilltowns made up from industrial-looking structures and buildings. Pearce also shows three works in oil and encaustic on paper that relate to stormy weather. Finally, twenty works on paper that began with photo transfers of found images, to which Pearce added marks and swirls of ink and conté, is installed in a grid. Although he works with traditional media, Pearce’s is a post-modern view, and viewers can engage in a kind of forensic activity, trying to put together meaning and ultimately, interpretations of his work.

Martin Pearce lives and works in Guelph, Ontario, where he is an Assistant Professor at the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph. His work is represented in Hamilton, Ontario at the transit gallery.
