On View: Selections from our Recent Acquisitions

six artist | sixteen works | one hot show
June 16 to September 9, 2007

To kick off the Kelowna Art Gallery’s 30th Anniversary we are pleased to present our most recent acquisitions from the last two years.  Many of these works are on view for the first time in a public art gallery and are prime examples of the diverse range of sculpture, painting and photography that make up the contemporary art content in our vault.  This show features the works of six Canadian artists, Judy Burns, Jack Davis, Aganetha Dyck, Lee Goreas, Ann Kipling and Tony Scherman.

Contemporary art is generally defined as art produced during the second half of the twentieth century.  Art historians use this term to indicate a particular period in time where most art seems to lack recognizable or dominant form.  It is the Kelowna Art Gallery’s mandates to collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit these contemporary works of art for all Canadians and visitors to enjoy as part of our cultural heritage.

At the Kelowna Art Gallery approximately ten to thirty new works are donated and purchased each year featuring local and national Canadian contemporary artist. Currently we have more then 500 works in the permanent collection.  New works are acquired based on research by the Gallery’s curator and then proposed to the acquisition committee.  This group is comprised of board members, an art advisor from the community and the president of the board.  Many works in our vault are designated as having “outstanding significance and national importance” for Canadian culture and are included in the Canadian Heritage database. We are proud to share these works and their stories with you and the rest of the country!
