Briar Craig: Oddments

May 7 to October 22, 2012

Kelowna-based artist Briar Craig has an unusual fondness for found texts, especially in the instance of tossed out hand-written lists, often on sticky notes. As was the case with one of his favourite artists of the last century, the German Kurt Schwitters, he prowls the streets with his eyes peeled for material – Schwitters used such flotsam in his collages. For his YLW installation Craig has photographed some recently found such scraps and has photo-mechanically reproduced them in huge scale. Passers-by heading to the security area of the departures end of the airport may find themselves thinking of their own such lists: did they remember to pack their socks, their extra sweater? Or, viewers may choose to simply enjoy the colours and shapes of the mashed-together coloured paper scraps, and ignore the jottings of someone else anxious to remember to pick up ketchup on the way home from work.
