Stacks and Piles: Recent
Work by Wanda Lock
November 1, 2008 to January 4, 2009
The Curatorial and Public
Programming departments at the Kelowna Art Gallery have collaborated to
invite Okanagan Valley-based artist Wanda Lock, to install recent work in
the Reynolds Gallery, and add to this installation through a short
residency in the Scotiabank Studio. The artist will be exhibiting
paintings on canvas and paper that incorporate elements of text (which the
artist thinks of as voices) along with her hallmark strong colour and
fanciful imagery. As well, Lock will install a concurrent series of works
on paper that began as scans from old readers, featuring the familiar
characters of Dick, Jane and Sally, with their pets and parents. These
have been happily reworked by the artist in a rather transgressive and
deconstructive manner.
Although these bodies of work
are separate enterprises by the artist, they connect at certain levels and
in specific ways, and often the themes revolve around the same issues, for
example, communication: does anyone really ever understand something
someone else says?
Wanda Lock currently lives in
Lake Country (Okanagan Centre) and grew up in nearby Oyama. She holds a
four-year diploma in studio art from the Emily Carr University of Art and
Design.
